고궁만정(古宮萬情) ^{Embracing: Palace Atmospheres}

《고궁만정(古宮萬情)》은 ‘고궁에서 즐기는 만 가지 정취’라는 의미로 2025년 궁중문화축전의 특별 전시이다. 조선 시대와 대한제국기를 거치며 궁궐을 중심으로 형성된 궁중문화는 왕실의 생활양식, 철학, 미학이 축적된 총체적 문화이다. 궁중의 건축과 복식, 공예, 의례, 문양과 색채에 이르기까지 궁중문화는 유교적 질서 속에서 정교한 상징체계, 권위와 미감을 바탕으로 오랜 시간 발전했다. 전시는 두 개의 주제 <깊은 색의 울림>과 <어울림의 정취>로 구성되며, 명정전, 빈양문, 함인정, 영춘헌·집복헌, 구조 02등 창경궁 일대를 거닐며 관람하게 된다. 조선의 5대 궁궐 중 가장 오랜 역사를 지닌 창경궁에서 펼쳐지는 이번 전시는 궁중문화를 오늘의 감각으로 다시 바라보는 소중한 기회를 제공한다.

《Embracing: Palace Atmospheres》 is a special exhibition for the 2025 Royal Culture Festival. Court culture, which flourished throughout the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire, reflects a highly refined system of royal life, shaped by Confucian ideals and expressed through architecture, attire, crafts, rituals, patterns, and color. Presented in two parts—Resonance of Deep Color and Harmony of Sensibilities—the exhibition unfolds across key sites within Changgyeonggung Palace, including Myeongjeongjeon Hall, Binyangmun Gate, Haminjeong Pavilion, Yeongchunheon and Jipbokheon house, and Structure 02. Set in Changgyeonggung, the oldest of Joseon's Five Grand Palaces, this exhibition offers a rare chance to experience court culture through a contemporary perspective.

1경. 깊은 색의 울림 ^{Chapter 1. Resonance of Deep Color}

전시의 첫 번째 주제 <깊은 색의 울림>은 고궁에 스며든 색을 따라 거닐며 색채의 조화로움을 체험하는 자리이다. 고연한 색으로 가득한 궁과 특별 설치된 작품들 사이에서 색은 눈으로 보는 것을 넘어 바람처럼 머물고, 빛처럼 번지며, 기억처럼 오래 남는다. 전통에서 이어진 색은 언제나 그 자리에 있었지만, 작가의 손끝을 더해지면 다시 살아나는 감각이 된다. 고궁의 시간 속에 잠재된 색은 작품을 통해 이곳에서 정취가 되고 다시 고요한 울림이 된다.

The first chapter of the exhibition, Resonance of Deep Color, invites visitors to follow the hues embedded in the palace and reflect on their quiet harmony. Within the timeworn architecture and newly installed works, color transcends visual perception—lingering like wind, diffusing like light, and remaining like memory. Revived through the hands of contemporary artists, these traditional colors emerge as renewed sensory experiences, transforming the atmosphere into a gentle, lasting resonance.

❶ 명정전 ^{Myeongjeongjeon Hall}

명정전은 창경궁의 중심 전각으로 왕이 의례를 행하던 존엄한 공간이다. 내부에 검은 벽돌이 깔렸으며, 어좌의 뒤로는 해와 달, 다섯 봉우리를 그린 ‘일월오병악’을 볼 수 있다. 명정전에 설치된 소소영 작가의 작품 [사물놀이: 궁중 딕셔너리]는 상징을 지닌 12가지 궁중 문양을 네 폭의 병풍에 담아냈다. 작가는 책거리 정물화 속 사물에 현대적 의미를 연결하는 작업을 이어오고 있다.
Myeongjeongjeon Hall is the central hall of Changgyeonggung Palace, historically used for royal ceremonies. Its floor is paved with black bricks, and behind the throne stands a screen depicting the sun, moon, and five mountain peaks (Ilwolobongak), symbolizing royal authority. [Play of Objects: Palace’s Dictionary] features twelve symbolic royal patterns across four folding screens. Artist So So-young reinterprets objects from traditional chaekgeori still-life paintings through a contemporary lens.

❷ 빈양문^{Binyangmun Gate}

빈양문으로 이어지는 이행의 통로에 설치된 조성민 디자이너의 [빛나는 별]은 평면을 구성하는 패턴을 통해 공간의 모습을 새롭게 제안한다. 잘라서 덜어낸 패턴의 여백 사이를 가볍게 통과하는 고궁의 빛, 섬유에 어리는 광택감이 공간을 감각적으로 변주한다.
Installed along the transitional passage leading to Binyangmun Gate, Cho Jaden’s [Starry Stars] reimagines spatial form through patterned surfaces. Light filtering through the cut-out voids and the subtle sheen on the textile transform the surrounding space into a sensory experience.

❸ 함인정 ^{Haminjeong Pavilion}

색 달항아리 Colorful Moon Jar
류종대 Ryu Jongdae

‘어진 마음을 품는다’는 뜻을 지닌 함인정은 자연과 전각 사이의 숨을 고르는 작은 정자이다. 류종대 작가의 [색 달항아리]는 다채로운 색을 가진 29개의 달항아리로 구성된 설치 작품이다. 3D 프린팅 기법으로 제작된 작품은 전통의 형태에 최신의 기술이 더해져 전통과 현대의 조화로운 접점을 보여준다.
Haminjeong Pavilion, meaning ‘to embrace a virtuous heart,’ is a small space situated between architecture and nature. Ryu Jongdae’s [Colorful Moon Jars] comprises 29 vessels in a range of vivid hues. Produced using 3D printing techniques, the work merges traditional ceramic forms with contemporary technology, highlighting a harmonious intersection of tradition and innovation.

2경. 어울림의 정취 ^{Chapter 2. Harmony of Sensibilities}

전시의 두 번째 주제 <어울림의 정취>는 영춘헌·집복헌 그리고 휴게공간 구조 02에서 펼쳐진다. 전시의 중심인 영춘헌·집복헌에서는 국가무형유산 보유자, 이수자의 작품과 전통을 재해석한 동시대 작가의 작품을 함께 소개한다. 자연과 사물, 사람이 어우러지는 공간 속에서 전통과 현대의 시간이 나란히 흐르고 과거와 오늘의 감각이 교차한다. 전통은 고정된 과거에 머무르지 않고 동시대 언어로 번역되어 새로운 사유와 해석을 이끌어낸다. 궁중문화의 다양한 정취를 새롭게 발견하는 이번 전시는 시대를 관통하는 한국 예술의 초월성을 경험하는 소중한 기회를 제공한다.
The second chapter, unfolds across Yeongchunheon and Jipbokheon Hall, and the visitor lounge Structure 02. At the heart of the exhibition, these spaces bring together works by National Intangible Cultural Heritage holders, trainees, and contemporary artists who reinterpret tradition through the sensibilities of today. In a setting where nature, objects, and people converge, the past and present flow side by side. Tradition is not confined to a fixed past; it is translated into the language of the present, opening new pathways for reflection and meaning. This chapter offers a opportunity to encounter the layered atmospheres of court culture and to experience the timeless transcendence of Korean art.

❺ 휴게공간 ^{Visitor Lounge}

관람객을 위한 휴게공간 [구조 02]는 한국 전통 건축의 목구조 형식에 대나무 발을 올려 만든 공간이다. 가로, 세로 목재들의 소박한 결합 구조의 중심에 기둥과 지붕 구조를 올렸다. 작지만 개방적인 이 정자는 고궁의 총체적인 감각을 전달하는 특별한 휴식 공간이다.
[Structure 02], a rest pavilion for visitors, draws from traditional Korean wooden architecture. Built with a modest joinery system of horizontal and vertical timbers, the structure features a central post-and-roof configuration topped with bamboo slats. Though small in scale, this open pavilion offers a moment of rest while embodying the sensory experience of the palace as a whole.
